College Football's Top Coach Does It Different

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (AP) - Football is a little different at St. John's University.

There's no tackling at practice. No whistles or wind sprints. And even though the program's commander has won more games than any other college football coach, there's no calling John Gagliardi "coach."

It's just John.

Gagliardi is 85, and has a record 486 career wins. He's racked up 462 wins over 60 years at St. John's. His 600th game with St. John's is Saturday, when the Johnnies host rival St. Thomas.

Gagliardi attributes his success to good football players and "a lot of luck." But some say his unique approach has been the key.

Gagliardi doesn't dwell much on his longevity or his successes, saying he's too busy each week focusing on the next game.
