Reno MMA fans are in for a treat next Friday night, as Bellator MMA visits the Reno Events Center.
The main event featuring Cheick Kongo and Vitaly Minakov will be televised nationally on Spike TV. The card also includes a pair of local fighters, Oscar Ramirez and Sinjen Smith, who both train at the Reno Academy of Combat.
"This is a dream come true," said Smith. "It's kind of surreal thinking that it's about to happen. I'm counting the days now - it was counting the weeks and months. I'm very excited."
"Super exciting," added Ramirez. "I mean Bellator is one of the biggest events in the world actually, and it's an honor to actually fight for them."
Reno Academy of Combat owner Rick Collup is also the manager for Ramirez and Smith, and he says they've earned this opportunity.
"I'm really proud of them because they both started at my gym as chubby little teenagers, so I've seen them grow up to be men, and not only men, but in one of the biggest events in the world...They're both undefeated and their record speaks for itself."
Everybody seems to agree - this is going to be the biggest MMA event ever to come to Reno.
"Oh yes, I totally think it is," said Ramirez. "I mean King of the Cages came here, but nothing compared to Bellator."
"It's a big deal," said Smith. "I think it will bring in a big crowd. A lot of people love MMA. MMA is a huge sport, and for Bellator to come to Reno I'd say is the biggest mixed martial arts event to ever come to Reno."
"I'm getting older, so I've been in lots of events," said Collup. "This is going to be the biggest event I've ever been associated with...I'm excited."
Discounted tickets are available for $39.50 at the Reno Academy of Combat.
