Andrew Chafin Wins Triple-A Debut for Aces

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Starter Andrew Chafin tossed seven strong innings as the Aces topped the Albuquerque Isotopes, 8-3, to extend their winning streak to four games Friday night.

Chafin, who was called up from Double-A Mobile on Wednesday, became the second Aces player to earn a win in their Triple-A debut this year. He also chipped in at the plate, scoring a run in the fifth inning and drilling a double in the seventh.

The southpaw was staked to an early lead when DiDi Gregorius led off the game with an infield single. Roger Kieschnick followed with a two-run blast to right-center, his eighth homer of the year and third in his last two games.

It stayed 2-0 until Albuquerque centerfielder Joc Pederson hit an opposite-field solo home run in the fourth inning.

The Aces took advantage of an Isotopes miscue in the fifth and upped their lead to 4-1. With Nick Ahmed at second and Chafin at first, Gregorius ripped a double to right that easily score Ahmed. Chafin made a big turn around third but retreated to the bag, forcing Gregorius to try and get back to second. ‘Topes catcher Tim Federowicz threw behind Gregorius but the ball sailed into center field. Chafin scored easily from third to make it 4-1.

Pederson brought the Isotopes back into the game with a two-run triple in the fifth but that’s as close as they’d get the rest of the game.

Mike Jacobs and Danny Dorn doubled in the sixth inning to put the Aces in front by a pair of runs at 5-3. In the eighth, Jacobs doubled for the second time and came around to score on Ahmed’s two-out, run-scoring base hit.

Reno put the game out of reach with two runs in the ninth as Gregorius and Jacobs each collected their fourth hit of the night.

The win puts the Aces a season-high seven games over .500 at 28-21. They will play for their second five-game winning streak of the season in game two of the series Saturday. Right-hander Bo Schultz (2-4, 6.23) gets the ball for Reno against Albuquerque right-hander Sam Demel (0-1, 7.71). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
