ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The Albuquerque Isotopes rallied with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and walked off with a 3-2 win on Walter Ibarra’s run-scoring single off Aces reliever Will Harris.
The ‘Topes started the scoring in the second when Jaime Romak launched a 3-1 fastball from Bo Schultz over the right-field wall for a solo home run. Schultz batted control problems as he walked three over five innings but settled in, limiting Albuquerque to just two hits.
The other hit came off the bat of Trayvon Robinson in the fourth. It plated Clint Robinson who led off the frame with a walk, then advanced to second on a throwing error by third baseman Andy Marte.
The Aces didn’t do much against Albuquerque starter and former Ace, Sam Demel. The right-hander limited his former club to just one hit over five innings. Reno finally came through against the Albuquerque bullpen in the seventh.
With one out in the frame, Andy Marte hit a booming homer to left-center to bring Reno within one run at 2-1. After Blake Lalli was retired for the second out in the inning, Nick Ahmed doubled to right. Albuquerque went to left-hander Paco Rodriguez to face the left-handed hitting Tony Campana but the move backfired when Campana served a single to left to score Ahmed and tie the game at 2-2.
Reno had a golden opportunity to go in front in the eighth when DiDi Gregorius led off the inning with a triple. Isotopes reliever Paco Rodriguez then struck out Roger Kieschnick and intentionally walked Nick Evans. He struck out Mike Jacobs for the second out in the inning before being lifted for Matt Magill. The right-hander promptly got Andy Marte to ground out to end the threat.
The Aces went quietly in the top of the ninth, setting the stage. Harris struck out Romak and Robinson to start the bottom of the ninth. Pinch-hitter Alex Liddi ripped a single to left to start the rally. Miguel Rojas sent a single to right to move Liddi to third. Harris then hit Mike Baxter with a pitch, loading the bases for Ibarra who knocked a 2-1 pitch from Harris into right for the game-winner.
The series continues Sunday in Albuquerque. Reno sends right-hander Mark Serrano (1-0, 4.15) to the mound against Isotopes right-hander Carlos Frias (2-2, 6.91). First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
