RENO, Nev. — Garrett Weber’s recent hot streak continued Saturday night as he collected three hits and launched a three-run homer in the Aces 7-1 win over the Tacoma Rainiers at Aces Ballpark.
Weber, who doubled in the second inning to extend his hitting streak to nine games, was called up from Double-A Mobile on June 29 in a corresponding move to Nick Ahmed’s call-up to Arizona. Over his last ten games, he’s hitting .488 (20-for-41) with 13 RBIs, 10 runs, 3 homers, 4 doubles and 2 triples.
The Aces bucked a recent trend of struggling with the bases loaded with a key hit in the first. With three on and one out, Andy Marte knocked a base hit up the middle to score a pair and give Reno a 2-1 lead.
That’s all the run support starter Mark Serrano needed. In his first outing since being activated off the disabled list on July 12, the right-hander limited the Rainiers to one run over five strong innings. It was Serrano’s first start since August 23, 2013 when he was with Double-A Mobile.
For good measure, the Aces added offense in each of the first four innings. A double play plated a run in the second to make it a 3-1 game.
In the third, Alfredo Marte belted his 11th home run off the year to deep left-field.
With two outs in the fourth inning, Blake Lalli singled to right, and moved to second on Argenis Diaz’ single. That brought up Weber who hit a 3-2 pitch from Jordan Pries out to right-field for a three-run blast.
Patrick Schuster, Kameron Loe, and Will Harris combined to work the final four innings to get Serrano his second win of the season.
The series finale is set for Sunday night at Aces Ballpark. Right-hander Bo Schultz (7-6, 5.48) starts for Reno. He’ll be opposed by Tacoma right-hander Matt Palmer (1-7, 4.61). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
