RENO, Nev.— The Colorado Springs Sky Sox scored three runs in the seventh inning to break a 4-4 tie, paving the way to a 9-5 win over the Aces Sunday night at Aces Ballpark.
Third baseman Rafael Ynoa hit a solo home run off Aces reliever Derek Eitel to start the seventh inning to give Colorado Springs a 5-4 lead. Ynoa also led off the game with a solo blast off Aces starter Trevor Cahill.
Reno came back to tie the game in the third inning on Andy Marte’s two-out, RBI-single that plated Alfredo Marte.
Cahill worked into the fifth inning and retired Paul Janish to start the inning, then issued a walk to Delta Cleary. Blake Cooper relieved Cahill and retired his counterpart, Brett Tomko on a sacrifice bunt that moved Cleary to second. After Cooper walked Ynoa, Tim Smalling ripped a run-scoring single up the middle for a 2-1 lead.
Two batters later, Sky Sox right-fielder Kyle Parker delivered a two-run base hit to up the lead to 4-1.
Reno had another answer in the bottom half of the inning when Danny Dorn launched a three-run homer to deep right to even the game at 4-4.
The Aces let a golden opportunity slip away in the sixth. Mike Freeman led off with a pinch-hit infield single, Nick Ahmed walked and Tony Campana singled to load the bases. With nobody out, Alfredo Marte hit into a 5-2 fielder’s choice to cut down Freeman at the plate. Mike Jacobs struck out for the second out and Andy Marte followed suit to end the threat.
After Ynoa’s second homer of the game, the Sky Sox tacked on two more runs on back-to-back hits by Dustin Garneau and Paul Janish to make it 7-4.
Trailing 9-4, Reno threatened in the ninth when they loaded the bases with nobody out. They came away with one run on Dorn’s sacrifice fly to make it 9-5. In all, they left 11 runners on base.
The series continues with game three Monday night. Left-hander Andrew Chafin (1-1, 6.23) starts for the Aces against Colorado Springs left-hander Yohan Flande (2-9, 4.42). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PST.
