Aces Dump Grizzlies 7-2

RENO, Nev.— Aces right-hander Charles Brewer has pitched twice against the Fresno Grizzlies this year and has stymied them both times. On Monday night at Aces Ballpark, Brewer worked seven strong innings to lead the Aces to a 7-2 win over Fresno.

The scoring started early as Fresno’s Tony Abreu doubled to the gap in right-center for a 1-0 lead. It didn’t last long as Reno came back with three of their own in the first.

DiDi Gregorius led off with a fly ball that was dropped by left-fielder Darren Ford. With Gregorius at second, Nick Ahmed hit a line drive off of the glove of diving first baseman Adam Duvall and into right field for a base hit to tie the game.

Nick Evans quickly followed with a single of his own and Mike Jacobs reached on an error by pitcher Edwin Escobar. Andy Marte made the errors hurt when he clubbed a two-run single up the middle to give the Aces a 3-1 lead.

Evans, who was named the PCL Hitter of the Week earlier in the day, was 4-for-5 with a double and a run scored. It’s the first four-hit game of the season for Evans.

Brewer rolled through the middle innings as he retired ten in a row at one point. His night ended after he struck out George Kontos to end the top of the seventh. He earned his second win against Fresno and third of the season. On April 20 in Fresno, Brewer allowed just one run over seven innings.

Jess Todd worked a perfect eighth inning and Kevin Munson delivered a perfect ninth to seal the Aces fifth win in a row. It’s the first five-game winning streak since last year’s team closed the season with five straight.

Reno bids for their first series sweep in Tuesday’s matinee finale. Right-hander Bo Schultz (2-3, 5.06) gets the ball for the Aces against Fresno right-hander Jason Berken (5-1, 2.57). First pitch is at 11:35 a.m.
