OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A person with knowledge of the negotiations says the Oakland Athletics have agreed to terms to bring back Jack Cust on a one-year contract.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hasn't made a formal announcement, which could come later Thursday.
Cust is likely to be the club's designated hitter this season. General manager Billy Beane has been committed to upgrading Oakland's lineup, and Cust provides some much-needed power in the middle of the order.
Cust became a free agent last month when the A's failed to offer him a 2010 contract. He hit .240 with 25 homers and 70 RBIs last season.
The San Francisco Chronicle first reported his impending deal.
