Wolf Pack Lose In WAC Tournament Title Game

The University of Nevada(35-26) baseball dropped a 17-4 decision to Fresno State(36-27) in the title game of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Peccole Park in Reno, Nev. The Wolf Pack came through the losers bracket on Saturday to win a pair of games but were unable to overcome the Bulldogs offensive explosion in the title game. With the victory FS earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and are now 36-27 on the season. The Pack end their season at 35-26.

FS center fielder Brian Lapin hit a his first of three home run on the day in the top of the first inning to stake the Bulldogs to a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning Nevada scored a run when center fielder Jason Sadoian walked and scored on catcher Konrad Schmidt’s ground out to cut the lead in half at 2-1.

The Bulldogs put the game out of reach in the second inning scoring five runs with Lapin blasting a three-run shot. In his third at bat of the game in the top of the fourth inning Lapin hit a two run homer and it was 10-2 Bulldogs. In the to of the seventh FS sent 10 hitters to the plate and six scored and it was 16-2.

Nevada got solo home run from pinch hitter Tyson Jaquez in the bottom of the ninth inning and scored a fourth run on a bases loaded walk to first baseman Shaun Kort to make the final score 17-4.

Pitching on just two days rest Pack starter Ryan Rodriguez(9-7) suffered the loss allowing seven runs on seven hits in two innings on the mound. FS starter Brandon Miller(2-3) got the win pitching five innings on six hit two run baseball.

Third baseman Jason Rodriguez(2-for-4) and designated hitter Baker Krukow(2-for-5) led the Pack with two hits apiece. Kort, Schmidt, and Jaquez each drove in a run for Nevada.

Lapin(3-for-4,4R,7RBI) finished the day with three home runs, four runs scored, and seven RBI for the Bulldogs.

Notes: Nevada placed four players on the all-tournament team in second baseman David Ciarlo, third baseman Jason Rodriguez, Shaun Kort in the designated hitter spot, and relief pitcher Matt Renfree.
