Pack Women Beat Weber State 50-38

RENO, Nev. - Johnna Ward scored 13 points and Marissa Hammond added 10 as the University of Nevada women's basketball team downed Weber State 50-38 on Monday night.

RENO, Nev. - Johnna Ward scored 13 points and Marissa Hammond added 10 as the University of Nevada women's basketball team downed Weber State, 50-38, Monday night at Lawlor Events Center in front of 629 fans.

With the win, Nevada improved to 3-1 this season, and 3-0 at home, while Weber State fell to 2-2.

Shavon Moore and Kayla Williams each recorded 10 boards in the game marking the first time since January of 2009 that the Pack had two players with 10 or more rebounds. The 10 boards are also a career high for Williams. With her 13 points on the night, Ward has scored in double figures in each game this season.

Thee Pack opened the game with a 7-0 run and held the Wildcats scoreless until the 16:34 mark of the first half. Nevada extended its lead to 10 points, 17-7, on a pair of free throws by Brittany Woodard with 10:16 remaining in the half. A layup by Kayla Williams with 1:45 left in the half put the Pack up 14, 25,-11, and Nevada took a 27-17 lead into halftime.

Nevada shot 40.0 percent (10-of-25) from the floor in the first half while Weber State shot 22.2 percent (6-of-27).

In the second half, the Wildcats cut the Pack's lead to four points with 15:14 left in the game before Nevada pushed its lead back up to nine, 38-39, on a jumper by Ward with 10:35 left.

A layup by Hammond with 3:23 left gave Nevada its largest lead of the game, 49-33, as the Pack went on to post the 50-38 win.

For the game Nevada shot 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the floor while Weber State shot 26.4 percent (14-of-53). Nevada finished with 47 rebounds to Weber State's 36. The Pack recorded 14 assists and forced 24 turnovers.

Junior Nicole Williams, who was making her first career start, ended the game with four points, two rebounds and went 2-of-2 from the free throw line.

"This game was a really good team win for us," head coach Jane Albright said. "It was a good defensive game for us as we held them to six field goals in the first half. Rebounds were huge for us tonight - Shavon and Kayla both had 10 and Marianne had nine. Marianne had a huge game for us tonight. She had great hustle plays and is a great leader for us."

Nevada will host the annual Nugget Classic on Friday and Saturday at Lawlor Events Center. Nevada will face Columbia on Friday at 2 p.m. while Iowa will take on West Virginia at 4 p.m. The consolation game is at 5 p.m. on Saturday and the championship game is at 7 p.m.

There are two promotions set for the Nugget Classic. "Faith and Family Weekend"- fans who bring their church bulletin to the game will get in free along with four family members. Also, fans in middle school who wear their team basketball jersey to the games will get in free. Free attendance is for the player only and teams do not have to come as a group.
