Reno, Nev. - The silver squad scored a 4-2 extra innings victory over the blue team in the University of Nevada’s baseball series that is being played at Peccole Park over the next week which will conclude fall practice.
The blue squad jumped out to a two-run lead scoring single runs in the first and fourth innings. Senior first baseman Shaun Kort’s ground out scored shortstop Garrett Yrigoyan with the first run of the game. Kort later scored the second run on catcher Carlos Escobar’s single and it was 2-0 after four innings.
In the bottom of the fifth inning left-handed pitcher Brock Stassi, who also hit for himself tied the game with a two RBI single that plated center fielder Jameson Rowe who walked and third baseman Nick Leid after he was hit by pitch.
In the top of the eighth inning Stassi walked and moved to second base on a failed pickoff attempt. Shortstop Cullen Mahoney reached on a bunt single putting runners on the corners for right fielder Brett Hart. Hart’s sacrifice fly broke the tie and Rowe added an insurance run with a single to score Mahoney and the silver squad went on to win 4-2.
Jared Harvey pitched two scoreless innings allowing one hit and striking out a batter to earn the win for the silver squad. Thomas Jameson was tagged with the loss for the blue team.
For the blue squad center fielder Westley Moss (2-for-3) and left fielder Waylen Sing Chow (2-for-3) had two hits each. Rowe reached base three times drawing two walks and collected a single for the silver team.
Game two is set for Monday morning at 8:45 a.m. and is free to the public. Sophomore Jayson McLaren is slated to start for the blue squad while newcomer Ricky Denham will take the mound for the sliver team.
