Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s victory over Juan Manuel Marquez last weekend has generated 1 million pay-per-view buys, an impressively high number that confirms Mayweather's once-debatable superstar status.
The fight at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas generated a remarkable $52 million as the highest-performing pay-per-view event this year. It's just the fifth non-heavyweight event to generate 1 million sales, a list headed by Mayweather's split-decision victory over Oscar De La Hoya in 2007.
HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg tells The Associated Press that even he was somewhat surprised by the impressive numbers. He credits Mayweather's rising popularity and Marquez's loyal Hispanic fan base for the event's performance.
