Giants' 2B Sanchez Needs Knee Surgery

PHOENIX (AP) - San Francisco second baseman Freddy Sanchez needs surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday the Giants hope to delay the
operation as long as the team is in the NL playoff race.

San Francisco was five games behind NL wild-card leader Colorado with 11 games to play entering Wednesday night's game against Arizona.

Sanchez was injured when he landed awkwardly while fielding a return throw from the outfield in the first inning of a 5-4 victory over Arizona on Monday.

Sanchez is hitting .284 in 102 at-bats with the Giants after being acquired from Pittsburgh on July 30 for right-handed pitching prospect Tim Alderson.
