WBC Champ Valero Won't Be Allowed to Fight

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - Edwin Valero won't be able to defend his WBC lightweight title on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao's fight against Miguel Cotto because of visa issues.

Valero says his U.S. visa wasn't renewed in time for the Nov. 14 fight in Las Vegas. He says he's planning to stage and compete in an event on Dec. 12 in Caracas, which will be backed by private businesses as well as President Hugo Chavez's government.

Valero alleged in a statement Friday that he's been the victim of "an act of discrimination" because of his sympathy for Chavez's socialist government.

Chavez is a fierce critic of U.S. policy in Latin America.
