CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Lawyers for Ben Roethlisberger claim in new court documents that the woman who accuses the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback of raping her at a Lake Tahoe hotel-casino concocted the story in part to try to shield herself from possible layoffs at the resort.
In a motion filed late Wednesday in Washoe District Court in Reno, Roethlisberger's lawyers say the woman fabricated the rape allegation against the two-time Super Bowl winner, a friend of Harrah's executives, in an effort to prevent Harrah's from terminating her.
The 31-year-old VIP hostess filed her civil suit in July, alleging Roethlisberger sexually assaulted her in his penthouse suite while he was at Tahoe the previous summer to compete in a celebrity golf tournament.
Roethlisberger denies the allegation. His lawyers suggest the woman is mentally unstable.
