CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago White Sox general manager Kenny Williams says his team is still aiming for the playoffs, despite trading away Jim Thome and Jose Contreras earlier in the week.
The two deals were compared to a 1997 "white flag" trade that saw the White Sox ship three veteran pitchers to the San Francisco Giants at the trade deadline, even though Chicago was only 3½ games out of first place at the time.
Williams says Chicago can still get back into the pennant race. That will take some doing, since the White Sox were seven games behind Detroit before playing the AL wild-card leading Boston Red Sox on Friday night.
