Colburn Named Fresno State's Starting QB

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Fresno State coach Pat Hill has picked Ryan Colburn as his starting quarterback to open the season.

Hill made the announcement Tuesday, calling it a "difficult decision" to pick Colburn over freshman Derek Carr and redshirt freshman Ebahn Feathers. Carr is the younger brother of former NFL No. 1 overall draft pick and former Fresno State star David Carr.

The Bulldogs open the season Saturday at home against UC Davis. Colburn is a junior who has not started a game since high school. He threw five passes in mop-up duty in 2007, completing four. He did not throw any passes last season.

Hill says he told his quarterbacks that if the offense is struggling he won't hesitate to bring in a backup.
