SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The San Francisco Giants have optioned right-hander Joe Martinez to Triple-A Fresno and brought up lefty reliever Alex Hinshaw to provide a much-needed arm in their overworked bullpen.
The Giants made the move before Friday night's game with Colorado.
The way the schedule goes, the Giants don't need a fifth starter until a series in Milwaukee starting Sept. 4.
Hinshaw, who was on San Francisco's opening day roster for the fifth time in his career and pitched in seven games, appeared in 46 games for Fresno this season and posted a 3.96 ERA.
Martinez was the losing pitcher in the Giants' 11-0 defeat to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday night.
