SEATTLE (AP) - Six-time Gold Glover Eric Chavez says his rehabilitation from his latest back surgery is going well and that he will try to return to play third base again for the Oakland Athletics next spring training.
"I'll try to get in great shape, roll the dice and see what happens," Chavez said Wednesday.
If his back is unable to withstand playing the field following two back surgeries and three shoulder operations in the last two years, the 31-year-old Chavez said he will try to be a designated hitter.
Chavez has been in Seattle for about three weeks doing rehabilitation with a noted therapist. He had surgery for a herniated disk on June 23.
He appeared in only eight games this season. He hit .100 with one RBI.
