RENO, Nev. — Nevada Hall of Famer and former major leaguer Andy Dominique has joined the Wolf Pack softball program as a full-time assistant coach, second-year head coach Matt Meuchel announced today. Dominique will serve primarily as a hitting coach and will also work with the Wolf Pack’s catchers.

“We are excited to have Andy back with our program,” Meuchel said. “He is an exceptional teacher of the game and the players respond well to him. Andy has a tremendous love and loyalty for the University of Nevada and we are excited to have his passion for the game and for this university as part of our coaching staff.”

This is Dominique’s second tenure with the team as he served as the program’s volunteer assistant coach during the Pack’s record-breaking 2008 season.

“I’m excited to be back on campus with softball program and working with a tremendous group of student-athletes,” Dominique said. “Coach Meuchel has done a great job with this program and I’m excited to be part of it.”

Dominique played four years for the Pack baseball team from 1994 to 97. He was the 1997 Big West Conference Player of the Year and was twice selected to the All-Big West team. As a senior, he was named an All-American by Louisville Slugger, the American Baseball Coaches Association and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1997 he played in the major leagues with Boston, Toronto and Seattle and he earned a World Series ring with the Red Sox in 2004.

Dominique was enshrined in the Nevada Athletics Hall of Fame last fall. He holds Nevada records with 62 career home runs and 30 home runs in a season (1997). In 1997 he drove in a school-record 96 runs and his 239 career RBI ranks second in school history.

In addition to serving as the team’s hitting coach, he will also be involved in scouting and various administrative duties.

Nevada won its second straight WAC Championship last season and advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the third time in four seasons.
