OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Athletics have purchased the
contract of right-hander Brett Tomko from Triple-A Sacramento.

Tomko, who played for the Yankees earlier this season, started Monday night's game against New York.

He was designated for assignment by the Yankees on July 21. He was 1-2 with a 5.23 ERA in 15 relief appearances for New York.

Tomko signed a minor league deal with the A's and made three appearances at Sacramento before being brought up. Tomko's start ends a streak of 15 consecutive games started by A's rookies.

Oakland optioned outfielder Aaron Cunningham to Sacramento.
