OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Athletics selected right-handed pitcher Chad Reineke from Triple-A Sacramento and optioned outfielder Eric Patterson to their top minor league club.
The A's made the move after they learned Wednesday's scheduled
starter Dallas Braden would be unable to go due to a swollen left ankle, which developed from a rash caused by a Neoprene guard used to protect his big toe when pitching.
Reineke was 5-4 with two saves and a 4.37 ERA in 24 games - 16
starts - with Sacramento. Since permanently joining the River Cats starting rotation May 31, he was 5-3 with a 4.09 ERA.
Patterson was recalled from Sacramento on July 24 for his second stint with the A's this year and had a .182 average with four RBIs in 10 games.
