NEW YORK (AP) - New York Mets starting pitcher Jonathan Niese
suffered a season-ending right hamstring tear in a 9-0 win over St. Louis Wednesday.
Niese was injured when he did the splits trying to cover first base in the second inning. He returned to the mound to throw a practice pitch and collapsed in pain. An MRI revealed a complete tear of the hamstring from the bone and Niese will undergo surgery.
He was relieved by Nelson Figueroa who shut down the Cardinals over 4 1-3 innings and also delivered a two-run triple.
