Giants Activate Joe Martinez from DL

HOUSTON (AP) - The San Francisco Giants have reinstated pitcher
Joe Martinez from the disabled list and optioned reliever Waldis Joaquin to Triple-A Fresno.

Martinez (1-0, 6.75 ERA) was to make his first major league start Wednesday against the Astros. He was hit in the head by a line drive by Milwaukee's Mike Cameron on April 9. The 26-year-old rookie right-hander suffered a concussion and three hairline fractures in his skull.

The 22-year-old Joaquin made his major league debut on Tuesday night, allowing a run on two hits in the Giants' 8-1 win over Houston. He had been recalled from Double-A Connecticut on Saturday.

The Giants also placed right-hander Henry Sosa on the 60-day DL with a torn shoulder muscle. Sosa was playing for Connecticut, but hadn't pitched since June 30.
