RENO, Nev. (AP) - Armon Johnson, a senior at Reno's Hug High
School who has committed to playing for Nevada next year, scored 33
points in a 76-75 win over Reno High to become the state's all-time
leading scorer. Johnson, a 6-foot-3 guard, scored 14 of his points in the fourth quarter and hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer Tuesday night to send the Hawks to victory. "It was the perfect night," Johnson said.
"Getting the record is a great accomplishment. But the most
important thing was getting the victory," he told the Reno
Gazette-Journal. Johnson's first basket of the night 20 seconds into the game gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead and gave him the state record for points scored in a career, breaking a tie with Las Vegas' Fred Thompson at 2,122 points.
"I've been working hard for a night like this my whole life,"
Johnson said. "Getting the scoring record is great and I want to
keep it for a long time. And winning this game was even better. The
Reno-Hug rivalry is amazing."
Johnson now has 2,155 career points with about six weeks left in
the season. He has averaged 38 points per game his last five times
out. "Armon is as good as any high school player I've seen play
around here," said Reno coach Kyle Schellin, a Carson High
graduate. "Nobody has played better than Armon is playing right
now."
"He plays with so much confidence," Schellin said. "There is
almost an aura around him. He just knows he's going to win the
game. Tonight he just wouldn't let his team lose."
The Hug fans erupted out onto the court and drove Johnson to the
far corner of the gym in celebration.
"I couldn't get away," Johnson said. "The fans were amazing.
I wanted to get away so I could shake hands (with the Huskies) but
I just couldn't. " Johnson's shot left the Hawks at 12-3 overall and 2-0 in the Sierra League. Reno is now 12-5 and 2-1 in the Sierra.

Armon Johnson's feat, while impressive, is not a record. The woefully incomplete, allegedly "official" NIAA record book may recognize Johnson's point total as a record of some sort, but at least one player has surpassed Johnson's total.
Prince Fowler, who graduated from Western HS in Las Vegas in 1994 before playing college basketball at the University of Oklahoma and later TCU, scored 2,616 points in his high school career.
Fowler's point total was listed as 2,543 in the March 3, 1994 edition of the Las Vegas Review-Journal in an article previewing the upcoming state tournament. Fowler scored a combined 73 points in two state tournament games, giving him 2,616 for his career.
Armon Johnson has a legitimate shot at brekaing Fowler's all-time record, espcially if Hug has some postseason success, but at this point, Johnson has nothing more than a school record and perhaps a Reno-area record. Certainly not a state record.
