ST. LOUIS (AP) - Todd Wellemeyer rebounded from his shortest start of the season with a solid 7 1-3 innings and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants 5-2 on Thursday night.
Wellemeyer (7-7) allowed two runs and seven hits in besting San Francisco left-hander Barry Zito. Wellemeyer lasted 2 1-3 innings in his previous start, giving up three earned runs against Minnesota on June 27. He was 1-3 with a 6.89 ERA in June.
Ryan Franklin worked a perfect ninth for his 19th save in 20 chances.
Zito (4-8) went 4 1-3 innings, allowing five earned runs and five hits.
The Cardinals won for the third time in nine games.
