WIMBLEDON, England (AP) - Indoor tennis has come to Wimbledon.

The new retractable roof over Centre Court was closed Monday after rain halted play during a fourth-round match with Amelie Mauresmo leading top-ranked Dinara Safina, 6-4, 1-4.

The match was to resume under the roof, built on the 87-year-old stadium to ensure play could continue on the most famous court in
tennis.

The two-piece roof is translucent so natural light can pass through, and there are also light fixtures that turn on when the stadium is closed. It takes about 10 minutes to open or shut the roof, which passed its tests during a day of exhibition matches last month May.

The roof wasn't needed during the first week of the tournament.
