WASHINGTON (AP) - The Boston Red Sox have activated right-hander John Smoltz from the 15-day disabled list to start Thursday night's interleague game against the Washington Nationals.

Smoltz, signed by Boston as a free agent in January, has been recovering from right shoulder surgery and has not pitched since a one-inning relief outing on June 2, 2008, for Atlanta against Florida.

He made six minor league rehabilitation starts, going 1-1 with a 2.63 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 27 1-3 innings.

Smoltz joins a Boston rotation in need of a reinforcement after right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a right shoulder injury. Smoltz is 210-147 with 154 saves and a 3.26 ERA in 1,229 career games.
