Field Scores an 88 in the Bareback

RENO, Nev. --- One thing that sets rodeo apart from other sports is the camaraderie among contestants. They travel together, help each other and in spite of competing against each other, are often very good friends.

Examples can be seen in every rodeo event and nowhere is it more evident than at the Reno Rodeo. The 2006-07 National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) bareback champions were rooting each other on and it was the most recent champion of the trio that was the most successful.

Kaycee Feild from Elk Ridge, Utah took the lead in the first round of competition with an 88-point ride on Western Rodeo’s Big Easy. He won the NIRA championship just before the 2008 edition of the Reno Rodeo at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo. He then finished in a tie for seventh place here.

Feild is through with college and focusing on his professional career. He qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2008 and is well on his way to a second qualification. He is currently ranked fifth in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and hoping to add a pair of Reno Rodeo spurs to his trophy case.

The number one and two men in the PRCA’s bareback riding standings also competed here. They are battling it out for the number two spot with identical scores of 83 points. Clint Cannon, from Waller, Texas, leads the chase for the gold buckle by nearly $30,000 over his traveling partner, Heath Ford, from Greeley, Colo. They each scored 83 points at the fifth performance of the Reno Rodeo and are tied for second place.

Matt Shiozawa, from Chubbock, Idaho, may be the most consistent tie-down roper here. He had two runs of 9.6 seconds each here on Tuesday. His total time of 19.2 seconds moved him into second place over-all.

Reigning world champion heeler Randon Adams from Logandale, Nev., and his team roping partner JoJo Lemond from Andrews also were successful on two runs. They have a total time of 11.8 seconds.

Saddle bronc riding saw Dusty Hausauer from Dickinson, N.D., have an 86 point effort on Western Rodeo’s horse named Pine Ridge. Hausauer qualified for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2008 partially due to winning the “Daddy of ‘em All”, Cheyenne Frontier Days. He won nearly $15,000 there and was proud to get the buckle. He would be extremely happy to leave Reno with the championship spurs. He is currently ninth in the world standings and could easily move up with money he earns here.

The Reno Rodeo is traditionally the start to the busy summer season. The lucrative Fourth of July run known as Cowboy Christmas is about to begin and jump starting that with success here gives contestants momentum.

Most of the competition at the sixth performance will feature the second round of competition. Action starts at 7 p.m.
