Reno, Nev.— Chris Roberson and Alex Romero combined for six hits and five RBIs Sunday afternoon, as Reno defeated Salt Lake 14-6 in front of 8,224 fans at Aces Ballpark.
The Aces jumped on the Bees early with a run in each of the first three innings and didn’t look back, pounding out 15 hits en route to the win. Roberson continued his hot hitting by going 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs, while Romero raised his team-leading average to .358 with three more hits and two RBIs. Luke Carlin added a solo home run, and Ruben Gotay insured the Aces victory with a three-run triple in the Reno’s eight-run seventh inning.
Aces starting pitcher Hector Ambriz (2-4) set the tone early, as he allowed only two earned runs in six innings while striking out six. Ambriz left the game with a 6-2 lead before Reno exploded for eight runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Mike MacDonald (4-6) was tagged with the loss for Salt Lake after allowing six earned runs in five innings.
Reno continues the homestand with a three-game series with intrastate rival Las Vegas Monday night. The Aces send RHP Cesar Valdez (4-4, 3.81) to the hill against the 51s LHP Brett Cecil (1-4, 5.71 ERA). The two teams will meet a total of 16 times this summer, with the overall series winner claiming the inaugural Silver State Diamond Challenge trophy. Monday’s first pitch is set for 7:05 pm.
