OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Athletics have picked Southern California shortstop Grant Green with their first round selection of draft.
Green, who led the Trojans with a .374 batting average this season, could be on the fast track to Oakland. With Orlando Cabrera playing with a one-year deal and Bobby Crosby in the final year of his contract, the A's have an immediate need at the position.
A's manager Bob Geren says the front office is excited about Green, who has been watched since high school.
Green (6-3, 180) hit four home runs and drove in 32 runs for the Trojans and batted third in their lineup.
He has a .359 career average (231-for-644) with 48 doubles, a school record 20 triples, 15 home runs, 102 RBI and 32 stolen bases.
