BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Rice leading hitter Anthony Rendon hurt his right leg and was carried off the field in the second inning of an NCAA super regional game against LSU on Saturday.
Rendon, the third baseman recently named the Collegiate Baseball national freshman of the year, was chasing a foul ball along the stands down the left field line when he got tangled up with shortstop Rick Hague before crashing onto the pitching mound in the Rice bullpen.
Rendon, who hit his 20th homer of the season during Rice's 12-9 loss in Friday night's series opener, was batting .388 with 72 RBIs this season. The injury did not bode well for the Owls, who needed to win two straight to stay alive in the NCAA tournament.
