Aces Win Second Straight Game

Reno, Nev.— Ruben Gotay belted an eighth-inning solo homer to break a 4-4 tie as the Aces toppled the Zephyrs 6-4 for the second-straight game in front of 8,124 fans Saturday night at Aces Ballpark.

The Aces trailed 4-3 in the sixth when Gotay singled, moved to second on a walk, to third on a groundout and scored the tying run on a Hector Ambriz safety squeeze. That set up Gotay’s go-ahead homer in the eighth, his first of the season.

Ambriz started on the mound for Aces, throwing seven strong innings and allowing only two earned runs while getting a no decision. Jon Coutlangus (W, 1-0) picked up the win after throwing a scoreless eighth, before Bobby Korecky (S, 5) pitched a perfect ninth for his second save in as many nights.

New Orleans starter John Koronka battled through six innings, giving up only one earned run and getting a no decision. Brett Sinkbeil (L, 1-6) got the loss after giving up two earned runs in the eighth.

Josh Whitesell had two of Reno’s 11 hits, while Nunez and Ambriz pitched in with two RBI each.

The Aces look for the series victory Sunday in the finale of this four-game set at Aces Ballpark. RHP Cesar Valdez (1-4, 5.45 ERA) will be on the mound for Reno, while RHP Daniel Barone (2-4, 6.06 ERA) will start for New Orleans. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. PT. It will be a Fox 11 Family Sunday, where fans will receive free ice cream samples provided by Tahoe Creamery. Tasters will have the chance to vote for their favorite flavor to become the ballclub’s official “Ace Cream.”
