Pack Baseball Falls To San Jose State In WAC Tourney

Honolulu, Hawaii – The University of Nevada (25-30) baseball team fell 5-3 to San Jose State(40-18) in the first round of the 2009 NAPA Auto Parts Western Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament being hosted by the University of Hawai`i at Les Murakami Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii. With the loss the Wolf Pack are 25-30 while Spartans improved to 40-18.

The Pack stranded second baseman Matt Bowman at third base in the top of the first inning but SJSU scored a run on two hits in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 advantage. Nevada designated hitter Brock Stassi’s fourth home run in the top of the second inning tied the game at 1-1.

SJSU scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. SJSU shortstop Kyle Bellows and third baseman Corey Valine hit back-to-back solo home runs in the third inning to put the Spartans in front 4-1. Bellows second home run of the game in the fourth inning made it a four-run contest at 5-1.

The Pack scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning on two hits. Left fielder Nick Melino’s bases loaded single plated both runs in the inning but Nevada was able to get any closer falling 5-3.

Nevada starter Derek Achelpohl (4-6) was tagged with the loss allowing five runs, four earned in seven innings on the mound. SJSU starter Ryan Shopshire (5-1) earned the victory giving up three runs on seven hits in 7.2 innings on the mound.

Center fielder Westley Moss (2-for-3,R) and right fielder Brett Hart (2-for-4) led the Pack with two hits each while Melino drove in a team-high two.

Bellows (3-for-4,3R,2RBI) was the hitting star for the Spartans with his three hits, three runs scored, two RBI and two home runs on the day. Center fielder Jason Martin (2-for-5,RBI) and Valine (2-for-4,R,2RBI) added two hits each.

Nevada will play the loser of tonight’s late game between Louisiana Tech versus Hawai`i at 2:00 p.m. PT on Friday.
