Reno, Nev.— Alex Romero collected two hits and scored a run, but the New Orleans Zephyrs scored six times in the middle innings to take a 7-2 decision over the Reno Aces in the series opener Thursday at Aces Ballpark.

Reno took a 2-1 lead into the fifth inning, but it was just then that the Zephyrs offense came to life. New Orleans scored three runs in the fifth, two more in the sixth and one in the eighth to take the lead and hold it for good.

Aces starter Tony Barnette (2-4) was pinned with the loss, surrendering six runs on seven hits over six innings of work. Barnette walked three and struck out two. Abe Woody allowed a run in an inning of work before Jose Marte and Jason Urquidez each dealt a scoreless frame from Reno.

The win went to Zephyrs starter Willie Collazo (3-2), who scattered two runs—one earned—on five hits over five innings. Three New Orleans relievers combined to shutout the Aces over the game’s final four frames.

At the dish for Reno, Romero and Abraham Nunez each chipped in two hits apiece. John Hester drove in the Aces’ lone run of the night.

The series continues Friday night at Aces Ballpark. RHP Seth Etherton (3-3, 5.31 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while RHP Jarrett Santos takes the ball for the Zs. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. PT.
