RENO, Nev. (AP) - The U.S. Hand Cycling National Criterium Championship is coming to Reno next month.
The event will be held downtown on June 19 as part of the Tour de Nez bicycle classic June 17-20. It includes a three-day Omnium with a purse of more than $35,000.
Event promoter Tim Healion says a field of up to 50 will ride for the men's and women's national titles. Hand cyclists also will compete in a three-day Omnium of their own, with criterium races in Truckee, Calif., and through the Village-at-Northstar Resort.
Healion says hand cycling "embodies the spirit of the Tour de Nez." It was developed in the 1980s as part of an effort to create human-powered vehicles and since has been embraced by people with disabilities.
