NEW YORK (AP) - Drexel women's basketball player Nicole Hester is this year's winner of the Honda Inspiration Award after she beat cancer and helped lead the team to its first NCAA tournament appearance.
The award honors a female college athlete who has overcome adversity to excel in her sport.
Hester was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in fall of 2006. The native of Waldorf, Md., missed what would have been her junior season as she underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
The forward returned to play the last two years, and as a senior, Hester helped the Dragons to a historic season. Drexel dethroned 17-time defending champion Old Dominion in the CAA tournament semifinals to snap the Lady Monarchs' 51-game conference tourney winning streak.
