Wolf Pack Swept in San Jose

San Jose, Calif. – The University of Nevada (25-29, 10-13 WAC) baseball team dropped the final game of the Western Athletic Conference regular season to San Jose State (39-18, 15-7 WAC) at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif. this afternoon 9-3. The Wolf Pack end the regular season 25-29 and 10-13 in WAC play while the Spartans is 39-18 and won the regular season WAC title with a 15-7 mark.

SJSU scored two runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 2-0 advantage. The Spartans got RBI singles from shortstop Kyle Bellows and third baseman Corey Valine. Catcher Anthony Aguilera’s double off the top of the left field wall scored the Spartans’ third run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. SJSU scored the next six runs and held a 9-0 advantage after eight innings of play.

The Pack scored three times in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 9-3. Three consecutive single with the last coming from right fielder Waylen Sing Chow scored the first run of the inning. With two down back-to-back singles by shortstop Kevin Rodland and left fielder Matt Bowman scored the final two runs of the game.

Pack starter Jesse Rasner (0-2) suffered the loss giving up three runs on five hits in one inning on the mound. Luke Mazzanti (2-2) earned the winning pitching six innings of four hit shutout baseball.

Third baseman Tyson Jaquez (2-for-4,R), designated hitter Nick Melino (2-for-4,R) and Rodland (2-for-4,RBI) had two hits each to lead the team.

SJSU second baseman Karson Klauer (3-for-4,2R,2RBI) led the Spartans with two hits and two RBI.

As the sixth seed Nevada will open play in the 2009 NAPA Auto Parts WAC Tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii on Thursday versus the top seed SJSU at 2:00 p.m. PT. It will mark the fifth consecutive meeting after the four-game sweep by the Spartans this weekend. The same situation happened last season but the Pack won the WAC Tournament meeting 11-0 in Ruston, La.
