MEMPHIS, Tenn.— Reno was limited to three hits and tapped the scoreboard just once Saturday night, as the Memphis Redbirds topped the Aces 6-1 in the series opener at AutoZone Park.
Redbirds starter P.J. Walters (2-1) delivered a complete-game three-hitter for Memphis, striking out eight and walking just one to lift Memphis to the series-opening victory. The Aces knotted the game at 1-1 with a run in the third, but that would be the last time Reno would cross the plate. The Redbirds recaptured the lead with a run in the home half of the third, then added three in the sixth and one in the seventh to cruise to the win.
The loss fell to Reno’s Seth Etherton (3-3) who allowed five runs—though just one earned—over six innings of work. Out of the Aces bullpen, Jose Marte surrendered a run on three hits over two frames.
At the dish for Reno, Brandon Watson, Alex Romero and Bryan Byrne each chipped in a hit. For Byrne, it was his first-career Triple-A hit. The lone Aces run came when Byrne scampered home from third on a wild pitch.
The series rolls on tomorrow morning, with an 11:35 a.m. PT first pitch from AutoZone Park. Reno’s RHP Billy Buckner (1-2, 4.91 ERA) will take-on former Ace LHP Evan MacLane (2-2, 3.47 ERA).
The Aces return home on May 21 for an eight-game homestand. For tickets, stop by the Aces Ballpark Box Office, call (775) 334-7000 or visit www.RenoAces.com.
