San Jose State Beats Nevada 3-2

San Jose, Calif. – The University of Nevada (25-26, 10-10 WAC) baseball team lost a close 3-2 decision in the first game of a four-game Western Athletic Conference series at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif. tonight. The loss drops the Wolf Pack to 25-26 on the season and 10-10 in WAC play while the conference leading Spartans improved to 36-18 and 12-7 in conference play. The Pack will need to win the final three games of the series to have any chance of overtaking the Spartans for the WAC regular season title.

Nevada scored two runs on three hits in the top of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Consecutive singles by center fielder Westley Moss, first baseman Shaun Kort and third baseman Tyson Jaquez scored the first run of the game. After Jaquez’ had just singled and with Kort on third base SJSU catcher Anthony Aguilera walked to the mound without calling time and Kort stole home to make it 2-0.

The Spartans made it a one-run game scoring a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning after third baseman Corey Valine doubled and scored on designated hitter Tyler Heil’s ground out. SJSU scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to move in front for good 3-2. Center fielder Jason Martin started the inning with a single and was bunted to second base. Shortstop Kyle Bellows’ single but runners on the corner for Valine who delivered a single with two down to tie the game at 2-2. Bellows scored the winning run from third base on a passed ball by Pack catcher Travis Simas to make the final score 3-2.

Pack starter Derek Achelpohl (4-5) pitched well but was tagged with the loss allowing three runs, two earned on 10 hits and struck out five in 6.1 innings on the mound. SJSU starter Jack Adams (3-1) earned the win allowing the two runs on seven hits in tossing a complete game.

Jaquez (3-for-3,RBI) and Moss (2-for-4,R) led the Pack with three and two hits respectively. Jaquez had the only RBI for Nevada.

First baseman Danny Stienstra (3-for-4) collected three hits for the Spartans while Martin (2-for-4,R), left fielder John Schaffer (2-for-3), and Valine (2-for-4,R,RBI) added two hits apiece. Valine and Heil had RBI each for SJSU.

The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon with first pitch of game one scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Game two will follow 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first contest.
