DALY CITY, Calif. — Sophomore Scott Smith is tied for 72nd after the first round of the NCAA West Regional, being held Thursday-Saturday, May 14-16 at the par 72, 6,863 Lake Merced Golf Club.
Smith carded a seven-over 79 on Thursday and is tied for 72nd individually after the first round. USC’s Matthew Giles took the individual lead in the event after turning in a seven-under 65 on Thursday. He holds a one-stroke lead over Arizona State’s Jesper Kennegard who carded a 66 in the first round.
Arizona State is leading the 13-team NCAA West Regional at nine-under 279. The Sun Devils hold a one-stroke advantage over New Mexico (280).
The top five teams and top individual not on those teams at the NCAA West Regional will advance to the 2009 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championshpips May 26-30 at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
