RENO, Nev. — Sophomore Scott Smith will tee off at 10:20 a.m. Pacific Time on Thursday in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Men’s West Regional, being held May 14-16 at the par 72, 6,863-yard Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Calif.

Live scoring for the NCAA Regionals will be available at, while a complete recap of Smith’s rounds will be available at Smith’s tee times for Friday and Saturday will be determined by results.

This year marks the first NCAA Regional appearance for the Fallon, Nev., native who earned first-team All-Western Athletic Conference honors this season.

Smith led the Wolf Pack with a 72.79 stroke average this season and turned in a team-best seven top 20 finishes this year. Smith turned in his best finish of the year with a tie for third place, just one stroke off the lead, at the San Francisco Intercollegiate in September. That tournament was played at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, which is located just across Lake Merced from the site of the NCAA Regional.

Smith finished in the top 10 five times and was Nevada’s top finisher at five of 11 tournaments this season. He turned in a team-best 13 rounds at or under par, including four in the 60s with a career-low, seven-under 65 at the Wolf Pack Classic in October.

The top five teams and one individual not on those teams from the NCAA West Regional will earn an invitation to the 2009 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship May 26-30 in Toledo, Ohio. The University of Toledo will play host to the national tournament at the Inverness Club in Toledo.
