In his final game at Peccole Park University of Nevada (25-25, 10-9 WAC) senior third baseman Tyson Jaquez doubled home two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Wolf Pack a 7-6 victory over Sacramento State (27-22, 8-10 WAC) on Senior Day. The victory was the first for the Wolf Pack in the four-game Western Athletic Conference series after the Hornets won the first three contests. With the victory the Pack improved to 25-25 overall and 10-9 in WAC play. The Hornets dropped to 27-22 on the season and 8-10 in conference action.
Trailing 6-5 sophomore Brock Stassi, who came off the bench to fill in for Nick Melino at designated hitter in the third inning and later took the mound doubled to left center field to start the bottom of the ninth inning. On first baseman Shaun Kort’s ground out Stassi moved to third base and right fielder Brett Hart stepped to the plate. Hart was hit by pitch and the Jaquez was next to hit. Jaquez hit a 1-2 pitch from Sac State reliever Trevor York to the left center field gap and Stassi scored easily while Hart motored all the way from first base to score the winning run.
The Pack scored two in the bottom of the first inning when Kort’s single plated a pair of runs. The Hornets got one of the runs back in the second but Nevada responded with an RBI single from Hart in the bottom of the third inning to again lead by two at 3-1. Sac State right fielder Jeff Roth’s home run in the fourth inning closed the gap to a single run at 3-2.
Nevada senior second baseman Matt Bowman’s team leading 10th home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning scored shortstop Kevin Rodland who reached on a walk and it was 5-3. The Hornets scored twice in the fifth and sixth innings to take a lead 6-5 where it remained until Jaquez delivered the game winning hit in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Stassi (6-3) earned the win pitching 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. York was tagged with the loss giving up the two runs in his 1.1 innings on the mound.
Bowman (2-for-4,2R,2RBI), center fielder Westley Moss (2-for-5,R), Stassi (2-for-2,2R) and Kort (2-for-4,2RBI) had two hits each to lead the Pack. Bowman, Kort and Jaquez finished with two RBI apiece.
First baseman Blake Crosby (3-for-4,R,RBI) and left fielder Ivan Otsuka (2-for-4,2RBI) totaled three and two hits respectively to top the Hornets. Otsuka had two of Sac State’s six RBI in the game.
Nevada closes out the regular season traveling to San Jose State for a four-game WAC series starting on Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
