Cavendish Leads Giro d'Italia After Second Stage

TRIESTE, Italy (AP) - Alessandro Petacchi of Italy has won the second stage of the Giro d'Italia in a mass sprint Sunday.

Mark Cavendish finished second to retain the leader's pink jersey. Lance Armstrong was well behind in the main pack.

Petacchi covered the mostly flat 96.94-mile route in 3 hours, 43 minutes, 7 seconds.

Cavendish and third-place Ben Swift were given the same time, as were the chasing pack. Cavendish leads the overall standings by 14
seconds ahead of Columbia-Highroad teammate Mark Renshaw.

Monday's third stage is a 123.04-mile leg, which provides one more chance for sprinters before the mountains begin Tuesday.
