Alex Romero collected three hits and scored two runs, but the Fresno Grizzlies used a six-run fifth inning to roll to the 9-5 victory over the Reno Aces in the series opener Friday night at Aces Ballpark.
Reno led by a run through four innings, but saw the Grizzlies take control soon thereafter. Fresno pushed across six in the fifth and added two more in the sixth to take a lead it wouldn’t give up. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Aces.
Reno starter Hector Ambriz (0-1) took the loss in his Triple-A debut. The right-hander allowed seven runs—six earned—on six hits through 4.1 innings. Ambriz walked one and struck out one. Abe Woody tossed two scoreless frames and Jon Coutlangus struck out the side in the ninth.
Grizzlies starter Billy Sadler (3-0) earned the win, scattering three runs on four hits over 5.2 frames. Sadler walked four and punched out four.
For Reno at the dish, Romero led the way with three hits. Chris Roberson continued to swing a hot bat, collecting two hits and driving in two runs. Agustin Murillo chipped in two hits, two runs and two walks for Reno.
The series continues on Saturday afternoon at Aces Ballpark. RHP Cesar Valdez (1-2, 8.10 ERA) will take the ball for Reno, while the Grizzlies are set to counter with RHP Ryan Sadowski (2-1, 3.62). First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m.
On Sunday, the Aces celebrate Mother’s Day with a Breast Cancer Benefit. The Aces will wear special pink jerseys, which will be sold in a silent auction during the game. For tickets, stop by the Aces Ballpark Box Office, call (775) 334-7000 or visit www.RenoAces.com.
