Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin has been fired and will be replaced by A.J. Hinch, who was Arizona's VP of Player Development.

Hinch helped build the current Reno Aces Roster.

The 34-year-old played with the A's, Royals, Tigers and Phillies between 1998 and 2004. He is expected to be introduced at a Friday news conference.

Early speculation had Aces manager Brett Butler or Carson High alum Matt Williams taking the job, but CNNSI.com reports general manager Josh Byrnes preferred a non-traditional hire in an attempt to shake things up.

Hinch has never managed at any level.
