Former A's 1B Neel Pleads Guilty To Avoiding Paying Child Support

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Former Oakland Athletics first baseman Troy Neel has pleaded guilty to fleeing to a tiny South Pacific island to avoid paying nearly $725,000 in owed child support.

Neel entered his plea Thursday in a San Antonio federal courtroom. The 43-year-old faces up to two years in prison.

Federal prosecutors say Neel purchased a resort island in the Republic of Vanuatu for a reported $1.5 million. Authorities say Neel lived there to avoid paying the monthly $5,000 child support payments for his two children.

Neel played for the A's from 1992 to 1994. He continued his career in Japan and Korea before retiring in 2001.
