Reno reliever Abe Woody kept the Sacramento offense at bay for 2.1 frames, but five River Cat runs in the early going were enough to push Sacramento to the 5-3 victory over the Aces in the series opener Monday night at Raley Field.
After going quietly in the first two innings, the River Cats pushed across two runs in the third to take an early lead. But the advantage would be short-lived. In the top half of the fourth, Reno clawed back to tie the score at 2-2, thanks to a sacrifice fly by Chris Roberson and a run-scoring single off the bat of Brandon Watson.
In the bottom half of the fourth, though, the River Cats regained their lead, scoring three times to go-ahead 5-2. Despite a Reno run in the seventh, the Aces were never able to even the score again.
Reno starter Cesar Valdez (1-2) took the loss. Valdez surrendered five runs on six hits over 4.2 innings pitched. He walked three and struck out a season-high four. Woody was outstanding out of the Reno bullpen, scattering just a hit and no runs over 2.1 innings. After Woody’s exit, Josh Ellis worked a spotless eighth.
The win went to Sacramento reliever Steven Sharpe (1-0), who worked two shutout innings. Brad Kilby (1) picked up the save for the River Cats.
For the Reno offense, catcher Luke Carlin and second baseman Rusty Ryal led the way with two hits apiece. Trent Oeltjen doubled in the seventh, marking his sixth-straight game with an extra-base hit.
The series continues Tuesday night from Raley Field. The Aces will hand the ball to RHP Tony Barnette (1-2, 6.46 ERA), while the River Cats are scheduled to give the nod to RHP Edgar Gonzalez (2-1, 4.50 ERA). First pitch tomorrow is set for 7:05 p.m. PT. The action can be heard live on Fox Sports Radio 1450 AM.
The Aces return home on Friday, May 8 for a four-game series with the Fresno Grizzlies, Triple-A Affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. For tickets, stop by the Aces Ballpark Box Office, call (775) 334-7000 or visit www.RenoAces.com.
