INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - College basketball players will have to decide more quickly whether they plan to stay in the NBA draft.
A new rule approved Thursday by the NCAA's Board of Directors requires early entrants to withdraw from the draft by May 8. Current rules allow players to make that decision by June 15.
The change will take affect this fall and represents a compromise to an ACC proposal that would have forced players to make that decision by mid-April.
Coaches supported the measure so they could make roster decisions for the following season, while the board approved it, in part, so that players returning to school could focus more on academics.
