The UNLV sports world is mourning the death of former Runnin' Rebels star and basketball radio announcer Glen Gondrezick of complications following a heart transplant.

His close friend, Bobby Gleason, says the 53-year-old Gondrezick died Monday at St. Rose Hospital in Henderson. Gondrezick received a heart transplant last September at UCLA Medical Center.

Gleason says "Gondo" never gave up, the heart did.

Gondrezick starred on the Rebels' Final Four basketball team in 1977, and his jersey No. 25 was retired by the team in 1997.

He played for the New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets from 1977 to 1983, and later became a color commentator on UNLV basketball radio broadcasts for 17 years.

School athletic officials say they're making plans for a memorial service.
